Another PRide awards has passed us by again and 11 agencies from the 38 in Bristol took part. Notable results were Trimedia taking team of the Year off JBP and Pam Lloyd PR taking Outstanding Small Consultancy.
For me, the most creative campaign this year was Tai Chi farmers for Love OM by Bray Leno, which won the Best Use of New Media this year.
I have put a summary of the Golds below, but if you want to see who missed out or came close take a look at the CIPR website.

CIPR and Bristol Media announce strategic partnership
October 8, 2008

(Bristol Media follows PRBristol’s lead...)
We notice that Bristol Media have teamed up with our friends at the CIPR, well imitation is the best form of flattery! Seriously speaking, we think that it is a good thing that the news media and PROs are being brought in under the “Bristol Media Umbrella”. Many PROs saw Bristol Media as a group focused on creative, digital and film media. So the inclusion of PR as mainstream focus is to be welcomed. Well done Mike Bennett for realising the economic and creative potential of our circa 55 (to date) PR agencies in the city and I am looking forward to the event on Marketing Forum Event on the 17th Nov.
The partnership between CIPR and Bristol Media reflects the commitment of both organisations to support the growing importance of the PR industry in the region and importantly look to promote Bristol and the South West as a centre of excellence for PR practitioners working in consultancy, in-house or freelance – be they clients, employers or employees.
Mike Bennett, CEO, Bristol Media said: “We’re delighted to be supported by one of the most influential PR organisations in the UK and are now really looking forward to being able to offer a range of PR-focussed events, spokespeople, training and networking opportunities for our existing membership.”
He continued: “This collaboration will allow us to offer a whole host of services and benefits to our wider Bristol Media membership and we’ll be working strategically on some exciting new projects. We hope that this will be the first of several important collaborations with other networks and industry trade associations.”
Lis Anderson, Chair, CIPR WoE:, commented: “PR is such an integral part of the marcomms mix, that aligning our industry body with the organisation representing all creative industry in Bristol was an obvious move. PR should play a major part in this region’s growing creative economy and our Bristol Media alliance will certainly open up more opportunities for CIPR members. Even better that every thing’s right on their doorstep.”
PR Training & Events – Special offers for CIPR members

Feature Writing
Date: 10 September 2008
Location: Bristol
Time: 9.30am – 5pm
Providing feature articles for publication in regional and specialist publications can be an ideal way of raising your organisation’s or client’s profile. Being able to generate copy that engages the reader while also communicating the corporate message has become and essential PR skill.
This one-day session, delivered by leading trainer Vyvyan Kinross, will take you through the key steps of identifying feature opportunities, pitching ideas to the relevant editors, writing the synopsis and creating the kind of copy that will put you on their A-list of favoured contributors for the future. You’ll learn about the importance of style and illustration in creating impact, and you’ll pick up a few vital ground rules along the way.
This day will be of value to you whether you’re new to the business or a more experienced practitioner who simply wants to add effective feature writing to your portfolio of skills.
Introduction to Marketing
Date: 30 September 2008
Location: Bristol
Time: 9.30am – 5pm
A one-day course on the “nuts and bolts of marketing”. If you’re new to marketing, or if it’s a string you’d like to add to your bow, this hands-on, interactive, practical course will give you the essential grounding you need – in just one day. It’s a course designed specifically for people who want to gain a better understanding of the role of marketing, how marketing works, how marketers think … and how they talk.
You could be a PR professional or an exec working in an SME, and want to find out what marketing really means – once you get behind the jargon! – how you can work more effectively alongside marketers, and how effective marketing can benefit any business. If you’re serious about advancing in your chosen profession, and playing a more valuable role in your organisation, this could prove the most useful days’ training you ever take – for you and the business you work for.
PR for Radio
Date: 13 October 2008
Location: Bristol, GWR
Time: 9.30am – 5pm
Radio and television offer some of the most powerful opportunities for PR campaigns. This popular event offers a revealing insight into what works and what doesn’t work in this context. The session offers a chance to explore the skills of the broadcast interview and shows how to ensure your clients get airtime – and make the most of it. There’ll also be valuable information about the regulatory environment, product placement, and audience profiles. And there’ll be a glimpse behind the scenes at GWR, now part of G-Cap, the group that accounts for 40 per cent of all commercial listening. Plus a chance to try out your own skills in broadcast interview technique.
Introduction to Media Handling
Date: 17 October 2008

New for Talking Heads this autumn, this interactive course is designed for anyone new to working with journalists. It will help you to understand how to manage the media and quickly and effectively pitch your story. You’ll learn what journalists want from PR professionals and how you can achieve your goals.
The course includes practical skills such as building a credible story, developing effective messages and objectives, targeting, interview skills and overcoming objections. You’ll also develop an understanding of how personal style influences relationships and can be used to build rapport quickly. This course will help you to develop a solid foundation for an effective media relations career.

PR &News Industry Logs on to New Social Network
July 1, 2008

A new social networking website has been launched in the West of England to improve contacts within the PR and news media industry and to open a window on the world of ‘blogging’ and ‘Twittering’. The site is also supported by Liz Anderson of the Chartered Institute of Public relations, in the West of England.
Basic Web 2.0 tools such as Twitter, which allows users to send ‘news flashes’ around the world to laptops and mobiles, have transformed the business of ‘making and breaking’ the news.
Now a Bristol PR agency has developed www.prBristol.co.uk to stimulate blog debate about Web 2.0 and other industry issues and to share best practice. It also provides a ‘front page’ of up-to-the-minute news from RSS feeds and a less formal social space for ‘meeting and greeting’, called The Watering Hole.
Matt Anderson, Commercial Director of Bristol-based Montage Communications, built the site after realising that even his own industry’s awareness and understanding of Web 2.0 and ‘user generated content’ was limited, despite its growing impact on the news media and communications in general.
“Like many other offshoots of the Creative Industries sector, PR is quite fragmented and diverse, taking in PR agencies and in-house staff as well as sole practitioners and freelances,” he said. “prBristol.co.uk can provide a means of ‘conversation’ on the web and help bring people together.
“It will also help journalists to pinpoint stories and pictures that are relevant to them, rather than ploughing through dozens of emails of dubious value.”
The ‘blogosphere’, as it has become known, is an increasingly powerful force on the web, accounting for nearly two per cent of all UK website traffic – and it is growing all the time.
Matt added: “It will not replace face-to-face contact or ‘broadcast’ communication through the media and conventional websites but it will fill an important gap. That’s why we have set up a social space called The Watering Hole.
“Journalists and the PR industry are increasingly reliant on each other – we are all part of the news food chain. It makes sense to work together and to understand our respective responsibilities.”
Careful use of meta-tags linked to trusted websites and ever-changing content have helped to push www.prBristol.co.uk on to the front page of a Google search for ‘PR Bristol’ within a couple of weeks of the site going live – and without any overt marketing.
