Do you “Digg” The Digg Effect?
November 28, 2008
We thought that we would give the subject of “Digg” a little more explanation in order that all readers (including Media Mouse) can fully understand the social news media site. This site has not only the ability to cause serious traffic to your website, but can also influence front page news, the reason being is that there are 22million editors on this site! That number includes 1.9m in the UK. Digg has very active users in comparision to Delicious, whose users are passive. The only downside is that Digg users are very net savvy and tend to avoid adverts and help stories that are not strictly true to hit front page. It’s similar to Wikipedia’s problem, but on the whole, the online editors are good at “burying” a bad story. A story such as this post regarding “The Digg Button” where you can affect a live counter by Digging the story. Can be voted on by clicking the Digg button. Users can either comment on or blog a story that has been submitted to the site. If you find like-minded individuals then you can become “friends” and shout stories that may be of interest to them. The effectiveness of the story definitely depends on the content or how influential you are - how many friends that you have on the site. Stories that are unusual, funny or capture the mood of the public tend to go well. The recent election in the US has seen a surge of activity on the site around popular stories such as this one, which achieved over 35,000 Diggs. For a guided tour go here, or take a look at the hottest news stories below. Each week PR Bristol will seek to float a story on the blog and Digg to gauge the popularity of the story. This can be done either by going to Digg.com and creating an account, or if you are familar with Digg, look for the little Digg symbol below every post of PRBristol’s.

Isn’t this delicious?!
November 20, 2008

Most of us regularly use more than one computer and that’s where Delicious, the easy-to-use, free social bookmarking site, really comes in to its own.
Delicious allows you to tag, save, and manage your favourite/useful websites. You simply ‘bookmark’ the web pages that interest you. Think of it as a portable ‘favourites’ facility; wherever you are, whichever computer you’re using, you can still search through your favourite/bookmarked sites online.
Of course, there’s more to it than convenient access to your favourite sites. Not surprisingly, it’s a popular social tool, boasting 5 million users and 150 million bookmarked sites. You can share your discoveries with your friends and family, and use the site’s Network feature to keep track of the Delicious tags and users that interest you
If you would like to check the extent of your delicious network try Network Explorer for extra insight.
And if spotting trends is your thing, the sight has a hotlist on its home page that allows you to check out its most popular tags … simply Delicious!

November 19, 2008

Now, I am expecting some Stilton in my Xmas hamper for this!
Rumours abound about the Bristol Evening Post and the Western Daily Press becoming one paper. This may be only speculation but it does follow the trend of merging Sport and Business news desks and ITV news rooms.
Can we assume that this may become the formula across the board with Northcliffe - might we see similar moves with the Western Morning News?
Well, for that one you will definitely have to come through with the Stilton…!

Three different ways to digest the news
November 17, 2008

Sick and tired of the old newspaper or even the mainstream news website? Well, here are three ways to get a different news experience, by tracking several stories at once or even tracking location and popularity.
- If you haven’t already bookmarked our PRBristol media centre, please do, as this is a great way of scanning a snapshot of Bristol, UK news and trade PR or media news.
- Secondly, if you want to get a handle on breaking news on Digg, then my favourite way (and my screen saver) is Digg swarm, where readers swarm around new stories and make the popular ones grow.
- But the winner has to go to Newsmap, an application that visually reflects the constantly changing landscape of the Google News news aggregator. A treemap visualization algorithm helps to display the enormous amount of information gathered by the site.
