Architects meet on Bristol sustainability agenda

May 30, 2008

Bristol CC Fifty key experts and decision makers are joining forces for Bristol Hothouse, a built-environment forum to share ideas and solutions for a low-carbon Bristol, at Watershed on June 3.

Bristol Hothouse is presented jointly by CABE, Bristol City Council, the Architecture Centre and RIBA. Forming part of the CABE-led ‘sustainable cities’ programme, the half-day of interactive workshops provides an opportunity for delegates to debate and share ideas to develop robust, design-led, city-wide resolutions and accelerate the pace of change.

The Hothouse fits into a wider programme of work for CABE which includes a Climate Change Festival. CABE is developing a new resource with Urban Practitioners - a Manual for Sustainable Cities -‘sustainable cities.org.uk’ - which will provide inspiration, leadership and support for strategic decision makers in cities.
The website will explain the forces that cities can control and influence through strategic urban design and management to make the city region better able to respond to climate change. It is compiled by leading expert practitioners and researchers across various disciplines.
This event is also linked to the longstanding commitment by Bristol City Council to mitigate and adapt to climate change, including participation in the Low Carbon Cities Action Plan, and the Green Capital programme to make Bristol a low carbon city with a high quality of life.
Council Leader Helen Holland said: “We are very fortunate in Bristol to have such a significant pool of talent amongst the people who live and work here. Some of the most respected names in architecture, the built environment and sustainable development have links with our city and share a genuine interest in working together to realise our ambitions.
“Climate change is the huge challenge facing cities across the world. We have a challenging agenda for housing and economic growth and are committed to following sustainable development principles that will ensure the quality environment our citizens deserve. In Bristol we know we have the skills, experience and commitment to make a real difference on this crucial agenda.”
